| This sounds like a good idea to me, although actually implementing it would be somewhat overwhelming. |

| Yes of course, and I can guarantee you that it wont be in the first or even second release. I think a focus on a stable product is more important than conveniences, but we should always discuss things, they can always be pulled back up at a later time. |

You know, as a simple prototype, I would love to develop a little application that takes in a list of .tar.gz/.zip/.sh files, analyzes them, and makes suggestions on how to install the application in a convenient manner . It would also make the appropriate shortcuts and in the gnome/kde menu and on the desktop.
Something I want to develop in my little spare time. I am completely fed up with going on the web, finding some application not in the repos or not packaged as a convenient RPM, and jumping through hoops to install it, make shortcuts, determine dependencies, etc.

Not making any promises as to when it will come out though - I'm a full time student unfortunately.
(What is Christmas/Thanksgiving break for, anyway? ) |

Cool!
Anyway, I think an overall more feasible option would be to spend a good amount of time developing the app I just mentioned and making it amazing at what it is designed to do, and fully integrated it into the Desktop Linux environment so as to make Desktop Linux a step ahead, so to speak.
I can imagine so many things from this - for exampe, adding a integrated Google search to find apps on the fly. |

Will the system be RPM or Debian based? Perhaps utilizing both if Andrew can pull off a the holy grail of a package management system that will do everything including tar files and one click internet installations? Or (shows naivete), were tar files all you were going to use?
Oh, and Hi Andrew. I'm from openSuse too. I see you post there a lot. |

| I would like to use both. It works great on Xandros. If not, I personally would prefer RPMs, but Debs have the option to change Rpms into Debs. |

| Will we have a "restricted" driver repository? |

IDEA: eyecandy repository --everything related to eyecandy all in one place.
Tell me what you think of it.
