I was thinking that we should include an FPS in our system. One of the simplest is Nexuiz.

Nexuiz is a first-person shooter by Alientrap Software. It is a free game: source code is free software and data is free content. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Version 1.0 was released on May 31, 2005. The current version, 2.3, was released on May 31, 2007.

Nexuiz uses DarkPlaces, a significantly modified Quake engine.

What do you think?

my computer has a GB of RAM, and it couldn't handle Sabayon, I don't think a first person shooter is a good idea
in fact it can't even handle "Super Tux", a Mario style game thats on the GameBoy Shocked , so no, I don't think so

That would be more of your graphic card though, not your memory.

but it does really well with videos and what not from youtube, so why wouldn't it be able to handle a mario style game?

Yeah, I would think so. Interesting.

It might just be the drivers for your card. My ATI card on my old computer is quite good under Windows, but can't run most games under Linux because of the driver. My nVidia card, equal cost, almost-equal specs can under Linux - apparently because nVidia create good Linux drivers. Is yours an ATI card?

Also, I was thinking: if this distro is to appeal to ALL users, it might be better not to include a game by default that would be rated M15+ or whatever rating your country's system gives. Perhaps World of Padman might be a better game to add, if we were to add an FPS, as it has no blood effects, and it is highly unrealistic (aliens and whatnot, I think) so it would be unlikely to be given a rating of M15+ (again, this depends on your local rating system).

Any thoughts?

I agree with the all users, but then again look at the options presented. 1. What person not allowed to play this type of game will be using Linux, and especially without a parent who knows how to work the system and set permissions to block content. 2. It could always be put in the installation software, but not included by default (or put in a different repository, like community). 3. By limited software to appeal to everyone, it creates a dislike in those that want what was eliminated, so either way we lose if that's the path we follow.

I'm not a gamer, but Nexuiz is also in the Debian Unstable repository.
So free of choice Smile

Put it in the repos. Keep the base distro to a minimum. If we're going to try to make good where other distros have failed we need to not include bloat in the basic system. Just my thoughts.

there are a lot of nice games... but you need 3d acceleration (with appropiate drivers)...

enemy territory
tremulous
open arena

and all their mods

there are nice strategy games, as freeciv or Battle for Wesnoth...

Siberian Fox, we simply can't assume that people using Harmonia are old enough to legally play a game that has a definitive age restriction, by including it in the distribution by default. Even if this has a relatively sound foundation in logic and past experience, it is still an assumption and is of dubious legality and moral validity.

There’s nothing wrong with including it in a repository and making it clear that you can only legally proceed to install the game if you meet the minimum age requirements for the country in which the game will be played. I downloaded AssaultCube (great game) from a mainstream repository and it worked out great.

Ok sounds reasonable, but what do you mean by legality? I have never heard of a game being illegal at an age just for the amount of violence (unless it s extremely vulgar). That's fine though, we can either put it in a repo, or just omit all together.
