Currently, my LFS system does not boot. After building and creating the appropriate /etc/fstab and setting up GRUB appropriately, the LFS system boots and a 'Kernel Panic: Could not mount root fs' occurs. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm not exactly sure how to go about fixing it, but kernel panics are usually fatal. It might be impossible to fix.

Check out any of those links. I'm no kernel specialist, so help from other forums is the best I can offer. Keep trying, if not, we may have to come up with a Plan B.

Let us know.

I think for a plan b we should base off of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, seems more stable than Gutsy Gibbon to me

True, if it comes to that, we should use that instead.

If we base off Ubuntu, which I personally would prefer not to, we should at least base off Dapper, which is a LTS release. When testing I've had problems from Feisty and Gutsy, but will test again when Hardy is released in April. It may be easier to start from Debian Etch, stable release and not all of the Ubuntu customizations added onto it already. Just my two cents...

I don't know anything about kernel panics, but I googled it and came up with this:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=kernel+panic+root+fs&btnG=Search

If I may ask, was there anything else in the error? Besides "Kernel Panic: Could not mount root fs", I mean.

Yes, it said root fs could not be found on /dev/sdb3 (which is the partition on which I built LFS). I have also tried /dev/hdb3, and tried different SCSI driver options when building the kernel, to no avail. I am tempted to either give up on LFS and start using Ubuntu or ArchLinux, redownload the LiveCD, or just try again.

I think I will redownload the LiveCD and then try one more time, after removing all partitions other than that of LFS, so there is no mistake about which partition to boot from. I will keep you updated! Smile

I looked around and found a similar problem involving a SATA hard drive. Does your hard drive use SATA?

Keep us updated Sam. If the new build doesn't work my vote, as previously stated goes for starting from Arch.

Good news! I downloaded the LFS LiveCD and am using that instead of Ubuntu. It is version 6.2-5 (stable release), so it does not follow LFS Book version 6.3 since the LiveCD is generally one release behind the book (LFS LiveCD 6.3 is still in testing).

Instead of manually compiling each and every package myself, I am using jhalfs, the automated LFS build script, so the computer I have dedicated to building LFS is running 24/7 continuously compiling and installing without my constant supervision. This means that LFS will be completed more quickly than I could, and since it works off the book's XML source, it follows it literally to the letter, removing any room for errors.

I will keep you updated on its progress and when it is completed, I will post an announcement here!

Thanks for all your patience, and I hope you have had a wonderful holiday so far!

i got that error about root fs when i compiled 2.6.2* and after formatting the distro (for a problem with another os and other things) it worked perfectly...

and maybe its about : 1- sata/ide drivers
2- ext2/ext3... drivers... (i think in some cases i compiled the kernel and didnt take that option accidentally, and it didnt work)

Ah, and i would rather take debian than ubuntu if you use a "base distro"

i just dont like ubuntu (i had some problems with it when trying to install it on my girlfriend's laptop)
