Well things are going slow with the LFS project. As previously mentioned, we need that to start with anything. So anyone who is able to can start with that project. If anyone knows of a pre built text base Linux we can build off of, that would work to.

Have we considered starting from Arch Linux? It's text-based and could be a possibility if the LFS project comes to a dead halt. Just a thought.

I've been quite busy lately with interviews for tertiary admissions and the like. I have had to go interstate quite often for the past week and will likely have to continue this week as well.

Hopefully, someone can take over the LFS system until I have more time on my hands? Otherwise, the idea of starting from a text-based distro sounds quite good.

Can't we just modify a stripped down Ubuntu? It would be loads easier. I was under the impression that this projected existed to make a more polished and refined Linux, not completely reinvent the wheel from scratch (eventually what LFS is). On this note, I think using a LFS system is counterproductive to what we are trying to achieve, consider the original goal and the obvious time constrains and commitments of the developers here.

Unfortunately, we would end up doing that anyway. We would need to modify Ubuntu in a way to meet near perfection, that we would have erased almost all of it by the time we were done. We don't need to reinvent the wheel, we just need a base, and if that's what it takes.

I think use Freespire as a base, besides, it's the first distro to "Just work" for me, plus it has two program installation styles, CNR and DEB, then we just need to get it to support RPM's (if it comes to that)

Plus it's simple to use, don't need to change very much to be good for you, just change the look and layout a bit

freespire is based on ubuntu, which is based on debian... why not taking debian as the base and not derived distros??? the derived would introduce "unlikely software" (i mean, we would like to have just a base system and then add our soft...)
but i think the LFS is going smooth as sam says...
