About The Desktop Linux project The Desktop Linux project aims to create a near perfect Linux. We want to create something new and exciting. Unlike other top Linux distributions, we will create this one entirely out of community members of all ages and nationalities. We hope that everyone who joins submits any ideas, images, and programs they have. All of our work will be done by our own hands, not those of a large company with funding and hundreds of full time employees. Here, we are striving for a Linux distro that can be as perfect as possible. Include enough applications to choose from so that you can either select many of them for a nice desktop, only certain ones for a work one, or just a very basic selection for servers. It should also be easy to use with a lot of documentation, but not sacrifice power and strength at the terminal. It should accomplish what many others have failed at.
Who Are We? We are a group of people from all around the world (including United States of America, Australia, Belgium, UK and Spain) who are dedicated to bringing Linux to the average desktop user.
What is linux? Why should I choose it?
Linux is a computer operating system, much like Windows or Mac OS, yet there is a difference. It is completely and utterly FREE. You will not pay for our Linux distribution unless it is purchased on a CD (in which case the only cost will be the cost of the CD and postage & handling). It can be downloaded entirely for free, no activation hassles, no registration warnings, no illegal activities. It is entirely free. As the cost of commercial operating systems increases, more and more computer users are turning to pirated operating systems, software and games. For these people, we wish to introduce an undiscovered world; a world where nothing comes at a cost and is completely customisable. Linux users know its beauty. The average PC or Mac user does not.
What about other desktop distributions?
There are numerous desktop Linux distributions around that have evolved quite far in terms of usability, performance and appearance. However, many of these have shortcomings that repel the average Windows or Mac user.
So what are we trying to do? Well, we endeavour to bring you the features you liked in other distributions (or another operating system, such as Windows or Mac OS, if you are not a Linux user already), such as top desktop performance, customisability, great appearance, an intuitive interface and the power to control your entire computer; to use your computer the way YOU want to.
At the same time, we hope to overcome the problems users face with these other distributions such as occasional use of the terminal (which will always be there for advanced users), easy installer and the lowest startup times possible. That is our promise to you.
